5 long hairstyles for men

During lockdown many of us unwillingly had to grow our hair out. And that was definitely something we had to get used to. Probably you have already been to the hairdresser or barbershop again, but you could grow out your hair for a change. In this blog post I will show you 5 different looks for longer hair and how you can best maintain and style them.

Long hair is definitely not for everyone. In some regards you should like a bit of attention when you are deciding to grow your hair out. You will get (positive) remarks more often, because longer hair for men is just different than most people are used to.

Different types of long hair for men

Not every long hairstyle is the same of course. There are many diferent ways or rocking longer hair. In most cases it will depend on your own hair type and what kind of style your like.

In some cases longer hair will require significantly more work compared to shorter looks. Even though the last example of long hair I provide in this blog post does not require that much special attention. Have a look at these 5 longer hairstyles for men and decide what look suits you best!

The classic Jesus hairstyle

Let us start with the most classic one right away, the so-called 'Jesus hairstyle.' This look has some serious length and the hair is usually almost completely straight. The hair should go over your shoulder and be cut in layers. This longer hairstyle works best if you have straight to slightly wavy hair. Jared Leto is probably one of the best known celebrities with a hairstyle like this.

A hairstyle this long requires some professional hair care of course. You do not want to get oily hair, but you also do not want to get frizzy hair. That is why I recommend a mild shampoo followed by a good conditioner. Some great examples of mild shampoos in my Moquer shop are: Pete and Pedro Argan Oil Shampoo, Bumble and Bumble Gentle Shampoo and Shear Revival Loom Shampoo.

When it comes to styling I would suggest a light hair cream for extra hydration or perhaps a light pomade that does not dry in your hair.

Mid-length long hair

Hair on shoulders

This hairstyle definitely has similarities with the previous mentioned Jesus hairstyle, but it is slightly less long and it has a bit more texture. A good example of a celebrity with this kind of hairstyle is Keanu Reeves when he grows out is hair, in the John Wick movies for example. This longer hairstyle works best for men with normal to medium thick hair. When your hair is too thick, you can always consider thinning it out a little bit.

At the sides the hair is a bit shorter than the back and it has a nice, layered look. Apply a sea salt spray or mousse in slightly damp hair and blow-dry it to achieve a lot of texture. Finish your hairstyle with a hair cream or paste with a light to medium hold.

Medium long hair with curls

The first longer hairstyles I talked about above are both mostly for men with straight hair. When you have wavy or curly hair, then there are still a lot of longer hairstyles you can choose from. One of the most famous men with longer and curly hair is of course Kit Harrington, best known for his role as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.

Curly hair is not always easy, so it is best to keep it hydrated and nourish it with a conditioner after shampooing. A couple of great nourishing conditioners are: Pete and Pedro Cream Conditioner, Bumble and Bumble Curl Conditioner and Jack Black Nourishing Hair and Scalp Conditioner.

Let your hair dry naturally and do not use a blow-dryer. That way your curls have time to assume their natural shape. In case you notice that your hair still can use some hydration, then apply a styling cream. When you actually experience oily hair, then it is better to consider a light to medium hold hair clay or hair wax with a matte finish.

Long wavy hair

Of course there is also an in between when it comes to straight and curly hair. I am talking about wavy hair. Wavy hair works great for longer hairstyles for men, because it accentuates the naturally waves in your hair. An excellent example of a celebrity with this kind of look is Timothée Chalamet.

When you have normal to thick wavy or slightly curly hair, you will be able to pull off this look when you decide to grow out your hair. The sides and back are approximately the same length, but shorter compared to the hair on top. You can either choose to wear your hair next to your face, or you can decide to slick your hair back a little bit with the help of a pomade.

Messy long hair

Messy and long hair

When you like to grow out your hair and not look forward to all the maintenance and styling, you can choose a more messy or tousled hairstyle. Especially when you do not want to use a blow-dryer on a day-to-day basis and use prestylers to style your hair, then keep reading. This longer and messy hairstyle is an interesting longer hairstyle without all the work.

A celebrity that pulls off this look well is Dev Patel. When you have normal to thick hair with some texture, this longer hairstyle for men works perfect for you. To style this kind of look you do not need much. You just follow the natural flow of your hair. If you want to achieve maximum texture (and some volume), then blow-drying is recommended.

Creams and lotions works best for longer and messy hairstyles. A few products I would recommend taking a look at for this messy and long hairstyle are the Baxter of California Groom Cream and V76 by Vaughn Medium Styling Cream. These products are light and will not weigh your hair down. They also provide some shine and hydration.

Conclusion

As you have read in this blog post there are many options to choose from when you choosing to growing out your hair. It does require some patience though, because in almost all cases you will have to grow out your hair for about a year to have some decent length to pull off any of the aforementioned longer hairstyles.

Especially that in between phase (awkward stage hair), when you hair is not very long yet but also not short anymore, is a difficult and annoying one. Your hair will not do what you want and for the next few months you maybe want to wear a hat or cap out of convenience.

Good luck!
