what is my skin type man

Nowadays there are men skincare products on the market. Also for men there are new products and brands being launched on a very regular basis. But not every facial product is suitable for everybody. It depends on your skin type. So, it is no surprise that a very common question is: What is my skin type?

Once you know your skin type, then you need to know how to treat it properly to receive the best results. Men's skin is very different from women's skin, so you cannot just start using the products of your girlfriend or wife.

Generally speaking men's skin is about 20 percent thicker and it contains more collagen. That last part is great, because it helps your skin looking firmer and less wrinkly.

Men do also have larger pores compared to women and that results in more oil production.

How do you find out what your skin type is? There are a few methods that can give you an idea.

Methods to find out your skin type

There are basically two ways to find out your skin type. Both methods you can just do at home, but for the second one you probably have to visit a drugstore.

Face wash method

The first way to find out your skin type is by washing your skin with a mild facial cleanser. After that you pat your skin dry with a soft towel and you do not apply any other product, so also not a moisturizer. About half an hour later you should take a good look at your skin.

Did a large part of your face started to shine? That probably means you have oily skin.

Do only your forehead and nose have a thin oily layer, then you have combination or mixed skin. That means that only certain parts are oily while other parts of your face or normal or dry.

When you cannot see any significant change and your skin does not feel dry, you can assume you have normal skin.

Does your skin feel dry and does it perhaps look a bit flaky, then you have a dry skin type.

Blotting paper method

When you are looking for a slightly more reliable method, you can use a blotting paper. You can find those at most drugstores or pharmacies.

You press this paper on various parts of your face to determine your skin type.

Also in this case you focus on the amount of oil that the paper shows in the light to find out your skin type.

What skincare products are best for my skin type?

When you know what your skin type is, then it is time to look for proper products for that skin type. Below if will briefly mention the skin types and how you best can take care of them. There will be plenty of useful links to other blog posts on our Moquer blog to help you out even more.

Oily skin type

Men with oily skin experience an excessive of oil. Excessive sebum can result in acne or breakouts because it can clog your pores. So, it is important to use high quality cleansing products.

It is recommended to use a face wash daily and a scrub about 2-3 times per week. Also a (clay) mask is recommended about once or twice a week. When picking a moisturizer, you should choose an oily free moisturizer for the best result.

An oily skin type is usually not very sensitive, so you can choose cleansing products that are a bit harsher, like skincare products that contain zinc, retinol, BHA/AHA, benzyl peroxide and the like.

Do not wash your face excessive in the hopes of removing the excessive oil, because that can dry your skin and your skin will produce even more sebum to compensate. And that can cause acne again.

Normal skin type

When you have normal skin you are in luck. You need less steps to achieve a smooth and healthy skin.

A good face wash and moisturizer is basically all you need. When you get older, your skin might get a bit dryer, so make sure to use SPF creams when you like to go sunbathing.

Of course there are good anti-aging moisturizers that can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles when it is time to address them.

Combination skin type

I cannot sugarcoat it, because combination skin is not easy. That is because your forehead and nose will have an oily skin type, to so-called T-zone, while the rest of your face is normal or dry.

For the best skincare routine you probably need different products for different parts of your face. For your forehead and nose you will have to follow the skincare routine for men with oily skin.

The remaining parts of your face can follow the skincare routine for men with normal or dry skin, depending on your skin type.

A face toner is a perfect product to balance out the oil production of your skin. Also serums work well to focus more on specific parts of your face instead of your whole face.

Dry skin type

A dry skin already implies you will need a lot of hydration. You will always have to wash your face, so use a mild facial cleanser to prevent your skin from drying out even more.

A scrub or face mask only have to be used once a week tops, when you look for some deeper cleansing.

When you are picking a moisturizer, it is important to choose one with plant based oils, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, amino acids or the like to properly nourish your skin.

Mature skin type

Whatever your skin type is, sooner or later we all have to deal with this one: aging. The aging of the skin is a natural process, but it can be propelled forward when you are in the sun a lot or by environmental reasons.

Your skin will lose moisture and the natural collagen production will slow down which results in less firm skin. Hydration is very important then, so a good anti-aging moisturizer is recommended to slowdown this process.

Also certain serums with hyaluronic acid and ingredients that boost the collagen production can help you out to firm your skin and diminish fine lines.

Conclusion

Hopefully you now know what your skin type is and which skincare products work best for your skin type. It is not always even to find the best products for your skin right away, so you have to try some. Travel sizes come in handy then.

A good skincare routine is important to keep your hair hydrated and healthy to slowdown the aging process. In the Moquer shop we have many high quality products for men to achieve this.
