Blemished skin man

Many men have, either temporary or longer, blemished, or bad skin. Generally speaking, you see that men have more blemished prone skin compared to women. That is because men's skin is thicker, the pores are larger, and the glands produce more sebum.

What is blemished skin?

Some men might say they have bad skin or perhaps oily skin, but what does that mean? When we say bad skin, then usually that means blemished skin. An oily skin does not have to bad skin, but when not properly cared for, it can lead to blemished skin. Blemished prone skin is usually oily.

When you have a blemished skin type, then you usually have white-heads or blackheads. Those are the result of clogged pores. Your pores can get clogged because of excessive sebum, the skin's natural oil that keeps your skin supple, dead skin cells, and dirt.

When you do not cleanse your pores well, your skin can get inflamed and that will lead to blackheads and white heads. That is usually what blemished skin means. When it is really severe and goes on for a while, it is called acne.

Causes of blemished skin

There are many causes for blemished skin, but in most cases, you will be able to make it better when you start to pay a little bit more attention to your skin. And you can never forget about the genetic part of course. Some men are more prone for blemished skin compared to other men.

Stress

Too much stress does not do your skin any favours. The stress hormone cortisol causes the glands to create more sebum and then your pores can get clogged. And clogged pores can cause blemishes. Also, other hormones can lead to bad skin.

Diet

Another very important factor for a healthy and smooth skin, is food. You are what you eat is a common phrase and that is definitely true for your skin. Too much saturated fats or very sugary food can produce certain hormones and that can lead to clogged pores again.

So, in many cases it is a matter of chain reactions that can lead to blemished or bad skin.

Wrong skincare routine

When you have blemish prone or oily skin, it is very important to adopt a healthy skincare routine. But I often see that men with these skin types are dehydrating their skin. This happens when you too frequently cleanse or scrub your skin, use products with too many chemicals, or when you never hydrate your skin after cleansing.

When your skin is too dry, it will overcompensate and produce too much sebum in an attempt to hydrate your skin again. That will lead to excessive oil and clogged pores that result in black- and white heads.

What should you do to prevent blemished skin?

As of now I only told you what you should not do, but there are also things you should do. In some cases, they are maybe an open door, but it is always good to have them listed when you want to get rid of blemishes.

Drink plenty of water

When you live a healthy life, then you need to drink a lot of water. Water makes sure your skin stays hydrated and it helps to transport important nutrients in your body. It helps your digestion system and helps to get toxins out of your body. Drinking a lot of water is a first step to get rid of blemished skin.

Enough sleep

Sleeping is important for the brain, but also for your skin. Your skin is the largest organ of the body and sleep helps your skin to recover and heal, for example when you have been in the sun for a while. Potentially you have noticed yourself that you get blemishes faster when you are not sleeping enough. That also has to do with the earlier mentioned stress hormones.

Hygiene

In this case I mean the frequent replacement of towels, washing cloths, sheets and pillowcases. These are all things that collect bacteria and where dead skin cells end up. Replace them frequently, because otherwise you are patting your skin dry with a towel that holds the same bacteria that you were trying to get rid of.

Exercise/diet

Make sure you eat healthy and with enough variety and that you exercise often. That way you get the nourishments you need, and you can sweat out certain toxins. That way you have a healthy flow, and it will lead to less blemished prone skin.

Products with antioxidants are great for your skin and it helps to protect your skin against free radicals. Free radicals can cause blemished skin and are sometimes even linked to cancer. Free radicals occur because of UV-radiation and air pollution, but also because of smoking, stress, alcohol, and such.

The best products for blemished skin

Skincare is always important, but especially when you have blemished or bad skin. It is important to use the correct products and use them in the correct way. That will definitely help to make your skin less blemish prone.

Face wash or facial cleanser

A good face wash is indispensable when you have clogged pores, because it helps to cleanse your skin deeply. A deep cleansing is important, so try to find a good face wash that contains zinc or salicylic acid to wash away dirt that got stuck in your pores.

That is the first step of a good skincare routine for men with blemished skin. You should use a face wash in the morning and in the evening.

Scrubs and face masks

A face scrub or mask are examples of deeper cleansing for your face. Usually, you want to use them about 1-3 times per week, because you do not want to dehydrate your skin. A scrub helps to exfoliate your skin to minimize the chance of sebum and dirt clogging your pores. Those clogged pores are the most important reason why men have bad or blemished skin.

A mask you leave on your face for a while, so that it can deliver important nutrients and a deeper cleansing. It is important to keep your pores free from dirt and excessive oil as much as possible. That why you minimize the chance of inflammations that can cause blemishes.

Moisturizers

After cleansing your skin, I would always recommend applying a good moisturizer, to re-hydrate your skin again. If you do not use any moisturizer your skin will feel dry and tight. Your skin will start overcompensating and produce too much sebum that leads to impurities. That way you are back to square one.

There are many good moisturizers that are also suitable for blemish prone or oily skin. They help to hydrate your skin, but without making it too oily or greasy. An example of moisturizers that work well for men with blemished skin, are oil free moisturizers.

A moisturizer should be used after cleansing your skin, so it is recommended to use them in the morning and in the evening, the same as for a face wash.

Conclusion

Blemished skin is annoying, but with a slight chance, you will be able to make it better. First it is important to live healthy, so do not smoke, do not drink (too much) alcohol, exercise enough and eat healthy. That will help a lot to make your skin look better and improve way more aspects of your life.

When you do that, then you know for sure that your blemished skin is not a result of your own behaviour. Drinking enough water and getting enough sleep are parts of that.

And it is important to use high quality skincare products for men that provides the necessary cleansing, but also enough hydration. That is an importance balance, you want to keep your skin clean, but also hydrated, so that your skin is not going to overcompensate.

Hopefully this helped you and hopefully your skin will improve a lot in the next few weeks!
