Haar vlechten mannen

I know, braids initially are maybe not coming across as very manly. The first thought with braids is perhaps Pippi Longstocking, but there are some great braid hairstyles for men out there.

The range of hairstyles for men is getting bigger and a braid hairstyle is just one example of them. There are also a lot of ways to wear braids and some of them are actually extremely cool. And sometimes it is just very practical to braid your hair and keep it under control. For black men it is almost the default way because it looks good and is easy to maintain.

That is why I am going to talk about three braid hairstyles for men in this blog post.

1. Viking braids

Viking braid

We usually associate Vikings with extremely manly men, so if even these men were wearing braids, then it must be cool, right? In the TV-show Vikings, multiple characters have braid hairstyles for men. Often only part of the hair is braided and not all of it.

There are so many options when choosing Vikings braids. You can go for a man bun with a braided knot or you can go for one braid in the middle over the complete length of your head. When you are really ready to go for an extreme look, you can shave the sides completely and create a fade. Then you make a braid on the top or at the back.

There are so many options to consider, so you can choose whatever fits your personality and your face shape.

2. Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks

We all know dreadlocks. Perhaps dreadlocks are the best known braid hairstyle for men. Usually you see that black men have this hairstyle and sometimes white men have it as well. You see that often in the more hippy and (digital) nomad sub cultures in the case of white men.

They are all dreadlocks, but with very different backgrounds and reasons why they are worn. It really depends of your hair type if dreadlocks are working for you. It is difficult to say where dreadlocks originated. The old Egyptians, Germanic tribes, certain monks, Aboriginals and of course numerous African tribes all had a type of dreadlocks.

Dreadlocks are a thicker kind of braid compared to most other braid hairstyles for men. In certain cases dreadlocks also have a religious background, like with the Rastafari and early Christians.

3. Box braids

The first two looks I showed usually have big braids or almost all the hair is braided. You can also choose for box braids or little braids. Box braids are smaller braids and they are usually braided in the grid. You can use these smaller braids to accentuate a certain look or just to make your braid hairstyle for men different to other braided hairstyles.

You can have small box braids fall on the side of your face, for example. In some cases little braids are also religiously inspired. Orthodox Jews have little braids at the sideburns. But regular box braids can be worn in all shapes and sizes, but the braid itself is usually smaller compared to dreadlocks or other bigger braids.

Hair products for braid hairstyles for men

Braided hair needs some extra hair care, because otherwise it can become dry and dull. Especially wavy and curly hair types experience this sooner, so men with these hair types need certain hair care products quicker. Especially when you want to keep your braid hairstyle a bit shinier. When it comes to styling you also want to choose more hydrating options.

Hair care products for braided hair

It is important to use a shampoo and conditioner to keep your braided hair clean and nourished. When you are thinking of choosing a braid hairstyle as a man, then a conditioner is must-have product. Do you have wavy or culy hair, then you could have a look at the Bumble and Bumble Curl product line. It has hair care and styling products to keep your braids and dreadlocks in a healthy state.

A leave-in conditioner could also help for your hair, because these products provide even more hydration than regular conditioners becuase you do not wash them out of your hair.

Do you notice that your braid hairstyle or dreadlocks are starting to feel very dry, then you can look into hair oils. A hair oil will be in your hair all day, so it has more time to nourish and hydrate your braided hair with important nutrients.

Natural hair oils usually contain argan oil, almond oil, castor oil or similar oils to keep your braids flexible and shiny.

Styling products for braid hairstyles

When you want to use a styling product to keep your braids or dreadlocks into shape, then creams and sprays are your best options. Braided hair does not require hair styling products with a very high hold. You need products with a lower hold and a decent amount of shine.

Hair creams contain all kinds of natural and nourishing ingredients to keep your braids hydrated. A hair spray does not have these ingredients, but it can definitely help with styling your hair as you want. Luckily we have a large selection of hair creams in the Moquer shop to help you style your braid hairstyle for men.

Conclusion

Braid hairstyles are maybe not the first thing you think of as a man when you are contemplating of getting a new look and sometimes it maybe does not fit your hairtype or personality. For other men it is actually a very great way to control their hair and the default way of styling their hair. When you are not afraid of a little bit of attention, than you can choose braid hairstyle like the Vikings had.

It is good to know that braid hairstyles for men require a bit more care. Because the hair is twisted in a usually tight way, it can become dry and dull quicker. That is why I would recommend using nourishing products when showering and also when styling your braided hair, you should pick products that provide some shine. In the Moquer shop we have hundreds of hair products available specifically for men.
