how to shave pubic hair for men

Shaving or trimming your pubic hair as a guy, also called manscaping, is definitely recommend now and then. Also, as a man you want to have everything clean and taken care of down there, so you can feel self-confident and hygienic.

Why would I shave my pubic area as a man?

There are multiple reasons why men and guys like to shave their pubic hair. Below I will mention a few example why men like to shave their private parts.

1. Hygiene

Let us start with the most common reason and that is that you want to be hygienic and clean. Dirt and sweat can easily get tangled up in your pubic hair and that can cause nasty odours and even infections sometimes.

2. Your partner prefers it

Some men shave their pubic area because their partner indicated that they prefer it that way. They think it looks better or they prefer it because it definitely is more pleasurable to have a trimmed or shaved pubic area when oral sex is happening.

3. Your penis will look bigger

When you trim or shave your private parts, then your penis will look bigger. When your penis is hidden in a forest of hairs, then it stands out less and looks smaller. So, even for aesthetic reasons you can decide to keep your public hair short or shave it completely.

Pubic hair styles for men

There are multiple pubic hair styles you can consider when shaving or trimming your private parts. So, it is smart to think ahead of how you would like to have your pubic hair look.

Clean shaven pubes

The first choice is to remove your pubes completely and go for a clean shaven public area as a man. That means that you shave your balls, penis shaft and the rest of your public area, so that it is completely smooth. You can choose to shave your happy trail, that thin line that goes from your belly button to your public area, but most men like to keep it.

Trimmed pubic hair

When you do not want to shave your pubic hair completely or when you think it is too much work to maintain it, then you can choose to trim your pubes and private parts. That will still look very hygienic and clean, but you will still have a bit of pubic hair that looks manly and trimmed.

Another option is to remove the hair on your balls and penis shaft entirely but keep the hair above your penis a little bit longer. You can make a smooth transition to the hair on your legs. You can keep your pubic hair the same length as the hair on your legs in that case.

“Lion's mane”

A very manly sounding pubic hair style is called the lion's mane. In this case you will shave your balls and penis, but the hair above you will leave longer. So, it has a lot of similarities with the second trimmed options I wrote about, but the pubic hair above your penis is longer (like in the image above).

Also, in that case you can manscape a smooth transition from your pubes to your leg hair. That will look a bit like a lion's mane, hence the name. A great alternative when you do not like to shave your pubic area completely.

Best method to shave down there for men

There are of course multiple ways to shape and model your hair down there. Every method has its pros and cons.

Trim pubes

An immensely popular way to shape your pubic hair as a man is to trim it. You can use a body trimmer for this that comes with multiple guards. That way you can easily trim down there with precision and keep everything the same length. The chance of cutting yourself is also very slim.

An advantage of trimming is that it will not show that easily that you maybe skipped a week. Some men also prefer to trim their private parts, because when you shave your balls completely, they can get a bit sweaty and stick to your thighs more easily. So, a little bit of (trimmed) hair can have some benefit. Or you can actually use some talcum powder for men by Brickell Men's Products.

Shave

When men decide to go for the completely smooth pubic hair style, then they usually shave their pubes. Shaving works best to remove all hairs down there, but shaving is a bit riskier as well. The skin of your penis, balls and rest of your pubic area is way more sensitive compared to other parts of your body because it is thinner.

Skin irritation and ingrown pubic hairs are also more likely, because the hairs are being removed close to the skin. You also need to keep your manscaping up when you want to keep it smooth down there.

The benefit is that it looks really hygienic and clean. A potential bed partner right away sees you think personal hygiene is important. For many men, a fully shaved pubic area is a great boost for their self-confidence.

Waxing or epilating

Waxing and epilating are methods that are meant to remove all hairs (almost) completely. When you wax your pubes, then you will apply some warm wax on the part you would like to shave. Next, you will place a wax strip over it. Press the strip on your skin and then tear it off in one go to remove all the hair.

Generally speaking, waxing provides slightly less irritation compared to shaving, but you have to be careful because your skin down there is definitely more sensitive and prone to little bumps and redness.

Epilating is removing hair with tweezers or with an electric epilator. Also, in that case the aim is to remove hairs completely. Using an epilator or tweezers can be convenient if you only want to remove hairs from a relatively small surface. Waxing is meant to remove more hairs in one go.

Hair removal cream

You can also use special hair removal creams to get rid of your pubes, but it is particularly important to use the correct kind of cream. The sensitive skin down there cannot handle just any hair removal cream, so do your research to find out which creams are suitable to use for your private parts.

In many cases it is safer to choose the previous mentioned methods. Trimming, shaving, or waxing are more popular methods, but using hair removal cream is something to consider if you know what you are doing. A hair removal cream you apply by massaging it on the area you would like to shave. Because of a chemical process the keratin structure of the hairs is weakened and that is why you can remove the hairs by massaging the cream on there.

Pubic hair grooming

Before and after trimming or removing your pubes it is smart to groom your pubic hair. That helps to minimize irritation and ingrown hairs.

When you are planning to shave or wax the hair down there, it is advisable to first take a warm shower to soften the hairs and relax the hair follicle. That way your pubic hair will be easier to remove.

Do you experience irritation, then use a body lotion or moisturizer to hydrate and repair your skin. When you got some ingrown hairs, you can best use a body scrub to help remove them by a mild scrub. That usually helps to loosen the hairs that got stuck.
