Alum
What is alum?
Alum or alum stone is a natural mineral called potassium alum. It occurs naturally and is widely used in shaving products and skincare items because of its caring effect on the skin.

Alum
Alum is hypoallergenic and non-toxic, making it safe to use for many skin applications. It is also antibacterial and antiseptic. An ideal product to use if you have sensitive or dry skin, as your skin could then use some extra care. It also has a healing effect on small nicks and cuts. That is why you often see alum, especially in the form of an alum stone, appearing in ranges of shaving products.
What is alum good for?
Alum is particularly good for caring for your skin after shaving or as an ingredient in deodorant. In the latter case, alum works especially well as an antiperspirant. When used after shaving, we are usually talking about an alum stone. That is literally a lump of alum that you rub onto your skin. It has a blood-staunching effect and is antibacterial. Ideal for treating small cuts or nicks after shaving with a classic razor.
You can also find alum in other forms, such as an alum stick, and there is also alum powder. As you can see, there are many good applications for using alum for better skincare, especially after shaving.
Alum block and alum stone
If you want to use alum after shaving, it is best to buy alum in block form. An alum block or alum stone is 100% potassium alum and can be applied directly to your skin. In the Moquer shop, we have alum stones for use after shaving your beard or your scalp. In the latter case, the Better Be Bold Blood Stopper is a very handy product to consider.
The Italian brand Proraso also has a handy alum stone to use in combination with their many other shaving products. The Proraso Alum Block fits nicely in the hand and immediately helps to relieve small shaving wounds and soften your skin. Often on the go? Then the Muhle Alum Pen might be something for you!
