Hand wash for men is just as important as it is for women. Cleaning your hands properly matters more than ever these days, so reach for a high-quality soap to wash your hands thoroughly and give dirt and bacteria no chance.
Hand soap for men
Hand wash may not be the most masculine of product categories, but it is an extremely important one. And yet, at airports and in restaurants, I still regularly see men leave the toilet without washing their hands. Not exactly hygienic, and frankly not exactly clever either.
We have known that soap is good for hygiene for a good 5,000 years or so. And one pandemic is barely over before you are reading about a possible next one, so a quick wash of your hands is a small effort with a big payoff.
How does hand wash actually work?
Just briefly, because it is rather cleverly designed. Soap does not so much "kill" bacteria and viruses as break down the layer of grease around them, causing them to release from your skin. You then simply rinse them away with water. That is why rinsing well is just as important as the lathering itself. Liquid hand wash is a little more practical here: easy to dispense and quick to wash off your hands.
Types of hand wash: bar or liquid
There is the classic bar of soap and the liquid hand wash with a pump. Liquid hand wash is a touch more hygienic to use (no one is sharing it with dirty hands) and dispenses nicely. A bar of soap, on the other hand, is considerably more sustainable: no plastic packaging, less weight to transport and often a longer lifespan. Both do the job just fine, so it is mainly a matter of preference. After convenience and a dispenser on the basin? Go liquid. Want less plastic in the house? A nice bar of soap will do.
When should you wash your hands?
Fairly obvious, really, but as I said, I still often see it go wrong. After every visit to the toilet, with soap, yes. Also after taking out the rubbish, doing DIY, gardening or other grubby jobs. And after a trip to the supermarket or somewhere busy, a quick hand wash once you are home is strongly recommended.
Which hand wash should you choose?
Since you wash your hands quite a few times a day, you want a soap that is gentle on the skin and will not dry it out. So look out for: Mild cleansers: harsh sulphates can dry out your skin with frequent washing. Hydration: glycerine or plant-based oils keep your hands supple and soft. Scent: subtle and in keeping with the rest of your grooming routine.
